eyes

Eating right and caring for your eyes is essential in keeping your eyes healthy. But, despite all the care you take, there are a few things you might be doing or using everyday that could do more harm to your eyes than you ever thought! Here are 7 common practices that might be harming your eyes.

eye makeup

Cosmetics containing mercury, lead and paraben should be avoided as their long term use could increase your risk of suffering from an infection and has been found lead to blindness. While opting for natural cosmetics might be a good idea, remember to discard make-up once they pass their expiry date. And always remove eye make-up before going to bed without fail.

Computer

Staring at your computer screen for long hours could increase your chance of suffering from computer vision syndrome, says Dr Prakash Nayak, an ophthalmologist. As it affects the lubrication system of the eyes and thus causes dryness and itching or a burning sensation. To deal with it, make sure you blink often and adjust your computer screen to be at a 15 to 20 degrees below eye level.

smartphone

Dr Atul Gupta, Consultant Refractive surgeon, says that the light coming from a cell phone might cause blurred vision, dry eyes and also increase eye strain. And if you are already suffering from vision impairment, it might further worsen the condition. To counteract this, increase font size and contrast of your phone and blink often.

sunlight

Excessive exposure to sunlight (UV-radiations) makes your eyes prone to infections and also damages the cornea as the radiations penetrate your eyes. To protect your eyes from the harmful radiations of the sun, don’t forget to use sun glasses, broad-brimmed hats and a scarf, when stepping out on a sunny day.

contact lens

A study done by the researchers from the New York University (NYU) found that the microbes found on contact lenses increases your risk of keratitis (a bacterial inflammation of the eye) and conjunctival infections. The only way to lower your risk is to wash your hands properly before handling them, replace them frequently with new ones and clean them with solution before and after using them.

eye drops

Believe it or not, most people tend to use eye drops without prescription to treat itchy or red eyes. But,this habit can further worsen the condition. Especially if you are allergic to the chemicals present in the drops. Also, using eye drops frequently to clean dirt or reduce redness might increase your risk of infection and inflammation of the eyes.

smoking
