Drinking coffee does not cause irregular heartbeat

A new study suggests that drinking coffee will not increase one’s risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) i.e. irregular beating of heart. According to the lead author of the study Susanna Larsson even drinking high amounts of coffee does not lead
to this condition. This is also one of the most comprehensive studies on the connection between the two things.

The conclusive results came out after studying two groups for a period of 12 years. It was conducted on both men and women and the results are valid for both the sexes. So people who like drinking coffee can safely consume it without putting their heart at risk of AF. But excessive consumption of this beverage can have other effects on the body. So you might want to keep a tab on the cups of coffee you have in a day.

However, the author warns that further studies need to be conducted on a few things such as are men more sensitive to high caffeine intake than women when it comes to AF. Her team also concluded that coffee may still trigger arrhythmia.

The study was published in the journal Biomed Central.
